Hello, I am Dr. Michelle Yanez

My purpose is to be a leader in Workforce Development and create pathways to jobs!
I help businesses connect to education to foster one of their greatest needs, a skilled workforce! Business and education are natural partners in the supply and demand of workers but do not communicate. This is when I can help them connect to customize training programs that create jobs and help businesses grow. That process also helps colleges stay current with industry demands and skills needed by high growth sector employers.
I became an advocate for workforce development when I was elected to the Rio Hondo College Board of Trustees in 2001. One of the roles of the community colleges system is to provide short term training programs to get people to work. Later in 2016, I was appointed to the Los Angeles County Workforce Development Board as a Commissioner and for years I communicated a unified voice of both education and business.
I am equally passionate about economic development and helping a region attract and retain businesses where there exists a strong workforce. I gained invaluable experience in my leadership role at the San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership. I understand that if businesses don’t have an environment that supports their growth, they will leave us. It costs them time and money to train workers that ultimately leave because they realize that the job is not for them. As a commissioner, I learned how training could be made easier and affordable for businesses. WDB’s do their best to screen workers and have access to government funding that could help pay the cost of a training program customized by the college on behalf of an employer. Businesses and colleges also have funding to leverage for training.
My purpose is shaped by my own educational pathway. I earned a Master of Public Administration from USC and a Doctorate of Education with a focus in Civil Justice.
